Parkways and medians on Silver, Gold, Lead and Coal: Katy has been talking to, meeting with, touring the neighborhood with, and e-mailing staff at the Solid Waste Department which is now responsible for repair and maintenance of these areas. Although a crew appeared to dig up and repair the watering system in parkways in front of 1600 and 1610 Silver over the past two weeks, nothing else has been done and several blocks are in dire straights. Katy sent an e-mail to Dan Humbles, Project Supervisor to inquire about the long list of needs and plans to meet those needs. If no response as of Wednesday, June 10th, James, Katy, and Craig will schedule a meeting with Councilor Benton and ask if Dan would like to come too. Continue reading

The Silver Hill Neighborhood Association is organizing the cleaning up of Lead and Coal between Yale and Sycamore as part of the “Great American Clean-up” on Saturday April 25, 2015. We invite you to join in and help keep our neighborhood beautiful. The city is providing bags, gloves, & a large dumpster that usually gets emptied a couple times. We will have a couple pickups but more is always better than less.
Supplies and coffee will be available at 1606 Silver at the start of the clean up (9:00 am). We will finish by noon. Join in, do a good deed, and meet like minded neighbors. Call 242-8192 with questions.

Approval of Minutes: The March 9, 2015 Annual Board Meeting minutes were approved unanimously.
Commissioner Benton Discussion: Jim initiated the discussion by talking about seeing more street people, drug deals and prostitution lately and seeing no patrol cars or bike officers. Commissioner Benton explained that he has been concerned about homeless for many years. The “Coming Home” program has proven to be quite successful but is targeted at a small segment of the homeless population. The City has set aside $1.2 Million plus another $750K for Albuquerque Supportive Housing projects. It also attracts 4 to 1 private funding and supports the local construction industry. Most of the homeless are suffering from mental/behavior health issues and Supportive Housing not only finds people a home but also provides case managers to follow and proactively check to see if people are taking their medications and getting the city services they need. Many of these people now qualify for Medicaid thanks to Obama-Care (The Affordable Care Act) so local residents are not funding the entire cost of the program. We need a centralized triage center to take in people with problems and then get them the help they need. These low-income housing units are located around the facilities that serve them and where there is public transit available. SHNA expressed support for these programs but also pointed that our neighborhood has way more than its share of this housing. We recommended that other neighborhoods also be used for these facilities.

Approval of Minutes: The February 9, 2015 Annual Board Meeting minutes were approved unanimously.
Police Commander Wisonet Meeting: Katy & Jim met with Commander Wisonet and discussed issues and concerns. The Commander explained that Albuquerque has less than 900 officers with 96 assigned to the SE. Most of the 96 officers are focused in the La Mesa-Trumbell neighborhood which is the most crime intense. DOJ may mandate more officers but that is not an immediate solution. As it stands right now we will be losing the bike cops. To everyone is encouraged call their City Councilor, Ike Benton (West of Buena Vista) and Ray Garduno (East of Buena Vista.)
